Chapter 2: Building Blocks of Linked Open Data in Libraries

Abstract

In chapter 2 of
Library Technology Reports
(vol. 49, no. 5) “Library Linked Data: Research and Adoption” we explore the world of linked open data (LOD) and linked open vocabularies (LOV) through the lens of our five building blocks of metadata (data model, content rules, metadata schema, data serialization, and data exchange). This chapter provides a common foundation for understanding the technologies used in the case studies in chapter 3 and frames the issues and opportunities associated with LOD/LOV in LAM (libraries, archives, and museums) communities.
