A Comparative Study of the Implementation: Management, and Evaluation of Evidence-Based Acquisition Ebook Plans in Academic and Research Libraries

Abstract

Ebook evidence-based acquisition (EBA) models have emerged as an important strategy for
providing broad access to ebook content while preserving librarian autonomy and agency. As
opposed to demand-driven acquisition programs, which have received significant study within the
collection management literature, EBA programs are less researched. A survey of academic and
research librarians’ experiences with EBA was conducted to explore adoption decisions, motivations,
management, selection, and overall impressions of EBA programs. Results suggest that EBA
programs are becoming more popular and that motivations for their adoption are varied. The results
underscore notable challenges and preferences in terms of budgeting, management, and title and
program selection. Further work is suggested to deepen the profession’s understanding of how EBA
programs fit within multiple ebook acquisition approaches.
